Summary of Key driving skills to help you develop control, awareness, and safe habits while learning to drive.

🛞 Vehicle Control & Handling

You must demonstrate smooth and confident control of the car, including:

Steering – controlled, accurate steering with proper hand position
Accelerator and brake use – steady speed, progressive braking, safe stopping and following distances
Speed management – maintaining appropriate speed for road and conditions
Clutch control (for manual cars) – smooth gear changes and hill starts
Ancillary controls – able to use lights, wipers, horn, heater, windows, and demisters safely while driving

🔍 Observation and Awareness

Good observation is key to safe driving:

Checking mirrors regularly and before changing speed or direction
Effectively checking blind spots when moving off, changing lanes, or overtaking
Scanning the road ahead for potential hazards
Responding to signs, signals, and road markings correctly

🛣️ Road Positioning

You should drive in the correct position on all types of roads

Keeping a safe distance from vehicles ahead
Staying in the correct lane at junctions, roundabouts, and on dual carriageways
Adjusting position when passing parked cars, cyclists, or obstructions

➕ Junctions & Roundabouts

You must be able to:

Approach and exit junctions safely and smoothly
Use the Mirror–Signal–Manoeuvre (MSM) routine correctly
Understand and apply right-of-way rule
Navigate mini, single-lane, and multi-lane roundabouts properly

🅿️ Manoeuvres

During the test, you’ll be asked to complete one of the following:

Forward bay parking – driving in and reversing out
Reverse bay parking – reversing in and driving out
Pull up on the right, reverse, and rejoin traffic safely
Parallel parking – at the side of the road

🚨 Use of Signals & Communication

You must communicate your intentions clearly and appropriately by:

Using indicators at the right time for safety, communication, and smooth traffic flow.
Giving clear signals without confusing other road users to keep everyone safe and ensure traffic flows smoothly.

Responding correctly to the signals of others is important because signals are a key part of how drivers communicate intentions on the road.

🚦 Following the Rules of the Road

The examiner will expect you to:

Follow the Highway Code because many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence.
Obey speed limits, traffic lights, and road signs because these rules are designed to keep everyone on the road safe and to ensure traffic moves smoothly.

Understand priority rules (e.g. at pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, junctions) because these rules determine who should go first in different situations. When everyone knows and follows them, roads become much safer and more predictable.

⚠️ Hazard Perception & Risk Awareness

You must show you can:

Identify potential hazards early (e.g. pedestrians, cyclists, parked vehicles) because this skill allows you to anticipate danger and act before a situation becomes risky.
Adjust your driving to minimise risk because road conditions, traffic, and the behaviour of others are constantly changing. Safe driving isn’t just about following rules – it’s about adapting to whatever situation you’re in.

React safely to the unexpected because it prevents accidents, protects all road users, and keeps you in control of your vehicle.

🚗 Independent Driving

You’ll drive independently for around 20 minutes, following Sat nav directions, or Traffic signs to

Show the examiner you can drive safely and make independent decisions.
Demonstrate your ability to respond to changing conditions without relying on constant guidance.
Reflect real-world driving, where you often have to navigate new routes safely.

😌 Confidence, Calmness & Consistency

Finally, you’ll be assessed on your overall driving attitude:

Remaining calm under pressure because driving is often unpredictable, and staying composed helps you make safe, effective decisions.
Showing confidence without aggression because it balances assertiveness with safety, helping to navigate the road effectively without endangering yourself or others.

Driving consistently and safely throughout the test because it demonstrates to the examiner that you are a safe, competent, responsible, and reliable driver.
