Do I need to pass the theory test before starting lessons?
No, you can start driving lessons before passing your theory test. However, you’ll need to pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test.

How long is each driving lesson at Union Driving School?
Our lessons last 1.5 or 2 hours. Longer lessons can help you build confidence and cover more driving situations in one session. We do not provide 1 hour of lessons.
What are the prices of driving lessons at Union Driving School?
2 hours of lesson cost £75 and 1.5 hours of lesson cost £60. We do not provide 1 hour lessons.
Can I book individual lessons or block package driving lessons?
You can book individual lessons or block packages for better value. Block bookings can be more affordable and help secure regular lesson slots. See further detail under the pricing tab.
How can I pay for driving lessons?
You can pay by bank transfer or cash before your driving lesson.
Can I get a refund for unused lessons if I have paid for a block package?
Yes, refunds are available for unused pre-paid lessons if you decide not to continue. Please allow up to 10 working days for processing. A refund processing fee (10% of the refund amount) will be charged.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?
You will need to give at least 24–48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson. Late cancellations may still be charged.
What do I need to bring to my first driving lesson?
Bring your:
- UK provisional driving licence
- Glasses or contact lenses (if you need them for driving)
Comfortable shoes for driving
Your instructor will check your eyesight and licence before you begin.
Do you offer automatic car lessons?
Yes, Union Driving school offers lessons in automatic cars.
Who are driving instructors?
All our instructors are DVSA approved driving instructors. They’re experienced, friendly, and trained to teach learners of all confidence levels – from absolute beginners to test-ready drivers.
What cars are used for lessons?
We use dual-controlled cars for maximum safety. Each vehicle is maintained to the highest standards and regularly serviced
Are your cars insured for learners?
Yes. All our cars are fully insured covering both the instructor and the student during lessons.
Where would I meet my driving instructor for driving lessons?
Your assigned driving instructor will come to you to meet you at an agreed place (your address or an agreed point) for your driving lesson.
Do you provide lessons during late evenings and over the weekends?
Yes, we provide lessons at evenings and weekends. We try our best to match the availability of our learners – but sometimes it isn’t possible.
How many driving lessons will I need?
The number of lessons varies for each learner depending on their ability and pace to learn new skills and previous driving experience. On average, most people need around 40 to 50 hours of professional instruction, plus 20 to 25 hours of extra private practice with a family member or friend. These figures are an estimate only.
How will I know when I’m ready for the driving test?
Your instructor will assess your skills throughout your lessons and through mock tests, and let you know when you’re test-ready.
Can you book my driving test for me?
Yes, we can book your theory and practical tests on your behalf. We may charge a fee for this service. Alternatively, you can book directly through the official DVSA website.
Can I use the instructor’s car for my driving test?
Yes, most learners use their instructor’s car for the test. It’s already equipped with dual controls and meets all DVSA vehicle requirements. Your instructor can refuse to provide the car if believes that you are not ready for the test.
Can I ask for mock driving tests before my practical driving test at DVSA?
Yes, Your instructor will arrange mock tests for you to highlight weaknesses to work on and to make sure that you are ready for the test. During mock tests your instructor will play the role of an examiner and give you detailed feedback and also help you to fix the faults.
What happens if I pass my driving test?
If you pass, the examiner will:
- Tell you what faults you made (if any).
- Give you a pass certificate.
Ask if you want your full driving licence to be sent automatically — if so, hand over your provisional licence.
When can I start driving after I pass?
You can start driving straight away — you do not need to wait for your full licence to arrive.
If your full licence hasn’t arrived within 3 weeks, contact the DVLA to check the status.
What happens if I fail my test?
Don’t worry — many learners don’t pass the first time. Your instructor will go through your driving test report, work on your weaker areas, and help you rebook your next test.
What if English isn’t my first language?
Some of our instructors are multilingual. We’ll do our best to match you with an instructor who speaks your preferred language where possible.
Do you offer advanced or professional driving courses?
Yes. We provide advanced driver training, fleet driver assessments, and refresher courses for both private and business clients.
